Bonus Project: Ancient Lightsaber

December is always a pretty exciting time for me – mainly because it means that I have some extra time to spend on my own personal projects. As many of you know, I’ve been finishing up some courses at Cal Poly Pomona’s design department. My latest class, a course on Technical Illustration, tasked me with creating an interesting illustration from a toy (the students get to pick what toy that is).

Being the Lucasfilm fan that I am, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to illustrate a lightsaber. Here’s the catch: I wanted to design something of a “steampunk / da Vinci sketch / artifactoid” version of the popular Jedi weapon – combining old school textures/patterns with a very new school bit of technology. Instant nerd smile! Check out the final results below:
